Sure, guys fantasize about dating Hollywood hotties, but in reality, their egos often can’t handle it. “Regular guys are made very anxious (by A-list stars),: psychiatrist Dr. Arnold Gilberg of the UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine tells Us. “They feel there is too much to fulfill.”

Is it just a coincidence that the marriages of Reese Witherspoon, 31 (who split from Ryan Phillippe, 32, last fall), and Jennifer Garner, 35 (divorced from Scott Foley, 35, in 2003), crumbled while the women were in career upswings?

For very successful women it’s difficult to find men that are equals,” says Gilberg. For Hollywood’s top earners those competitive feelings make the dating pool even smaller. While Newsweek reports that 25 percent of women earn more than their spouses, one study states that men are more likely to choose partners with less successful careers for long-term relationships.

“I had a powerful actress as a client who ended up marrying a very unsuccessful actor only because the successful actors didn’t get along with her,” says NYC-based therapist Dr. Michael Grove. The reason for the friction? “I think she scared them off,” he says. “If you had taken the zeroes out of her salary, it would have worked.”

But dating down isn’t always the answer. In fact, less-famous guys sometimes date A-listers to up their profile. During Diaz’s four-date fling with magician Criss Angel, 38, he missed no opportunity to name-drop the actress. (His ex-wife did some name-dropping of her own by including Diaz in her divorce suit.)
